I ended up using chalk in many ways in this project - first - as a background - the orange paper that is on top of the maroon/brown color is covered in chalk.  I 'painted' it on.  Then the light blue sky behind the castle is chalk and glue mixed.  The light brown on the castle tops is chalk and water mixed.  Even the castle stamped image is chalk mixed with Modge Podge used directly on the stamp prior to stamping the image - dried - and it feels like a foamy/velvety texture!
